W. Giles Allen, M.D., F.C.C.P.
Dr. Allen is the most “seasoned” of the physicians at Coastal Pulmonary. Raised on a farm in nearby Bladen County, Dr Allen graduated from North Carolina State University with honors before attending Medical School at Wake Forest. After completing his postgraduate training at the University of Florida’s affiliated hospitals in Jacksonville, Florida, he returned “home” to Wilmington. In private practice and as assistant clinical professor with the UNC system he has over twenty years experience in pulmonary and critical care medicine and has maintained board certification in these areas. Dr. Allen was involved with one of the first clinical sleep labs while in training and helped develop the Sleep Disorders Center at NHRMC, where he has been medical director since its inception. Dr. Allen is also board certified in Sleep Medicine. He is a Fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of both the N. C. Thoracic Society and the American Thoracic Society.

Dr. Allen and his wife, Lorry, have two teenage children and a multitude of pets. His hobbies include golf, painting, fishing, and piddling in his yard.

Brian J. Gilmore, M.D., F.C.C.P.
Dr. Brian J. Gilmore graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania. He remained captive in Philadelphia first earning his medical degree also from the University of Pennsylvania, and then completing an Internal Medicine Residency at Temple University Hospital. He made landfall in North Carolina by way of Duke University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He is board certified in both of these specialties, including Sleep Medicine. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and a Fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Gilmore is also on the faculty of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He has practiced in Wilmington since 1995, and with Coastal Pulmonary Medicine since its inception in 1999. His procedural expertise extends to all specialized Pulmonary procedures, including cardiopulmonary exercise testing and bronchoscopy. Areas of interest include his three young children, three dogs, and his wife. In his free time, Dr. Gilmore enjoys ministering to patients with a wide range of ailments, including asthma and allergies, emphysema, sarcoid, and other interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, and sleep disorders.

qBrian M. Legere, M.D., F.C.C.P.

Dr. Brian Legere grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts. He graduated with a degree in Biology, Magna Cum Laude from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. Dr. Legere received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Upon completing medical school, he did his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center. His fellowship training in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine was obtained at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Legere is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Sleep Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. He has a clinical faculty appointment with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Areas of interest include interventional bronchoscopy, pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, and sleep medicine.

wChristian B. Lloyd, M.D., F.C.C.P.

Dr. Christian Lloyd was raised in Florida and graduated with honors from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He went on to complete medical school at The University of South Florida and was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Vanderbilt University and fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at The Medical University of South Carolina. He is board certified in Pulmonary Medicine, Internal Medicine, as well as Sleep Medicine. Areas of interest include lung cancer and pleural diseases. He has expertise in interventional bronchoscopy. Dr. Lloyd is the only physician in Southeastern NC performing endobronchial ultrasound and he is also Medical Director of Intensive Care Services at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

wCarter J.H. Childs, M.D.

Dr. Carter John Herring Childs is the newest medical professional to join Coastal Pulmonary Medicine. Dr. Childs has been Assistant Professor of Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU), Greenville, NC since 2002. He attended medical school at Wake Forest University, and then performed his internship and residency at ECU’s Brody School of Medicine in the area of Internal Medicine. In 2002 Dr. Childs completed his fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Wake Forest University, after having completed his fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases at East Carolina University in 2001. 

Dr. Childs is a Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine, and is board certified in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians.


aAntoinette Izzo, P.A.

Ms. Antoinette Izzo grew up in Tar Heel, NC. She moved to Raleigh, NC and graduated with a Bachelor of Science from North Carolina State University in 1998. She worked at a veterinary hospital and realized after volunteering at a Raleigh emergency department that human medicine was her calling. She moved to Greenville, NC to attend East Carolina University and graduated with her Master of Science from the Physician Assistant Department in 2005. Prior to joining Coastal Pulmonary Medicine, Ms. Izzo was employed at Columbus Regional Healthcare Systems Emergency Department. She joined Coastal Pulmonary Medicine in the Fall of 2006. Ms. Izzo maintains her national certification as a Physician Assistant by completing continuing medical education in the areas of sleep, pulmonary, and general medicine and taking the recertification exam when required. She is a member of the Cape Fear Chapter of the North Carolina Association of Physician Assistants, as well as the American Academy of Physician Assistants. When away from work, she enjoys spending time with her family and pets, working on outdoor projects, and relaxing at the beach.
